Piispa Hintikan saarna messussa Espoon tuomiokirkossa 9.6.2019/ Sermon at Espoo Cathedral, Pentecost 2019

Saarna helluntaina 9.6.2019 / Sermon, Pentecost 2019

Apostolien teot 2:1-13, Joh. 14:25-29 / Acts of the Apostles 2:1-13, John 14:25-29

Muistan sen hetken bukarestilaisella metroasemalla, huhtikuun lopussa kohta kolmekymmentä vuotta sitten. Olin ollut parisen viikkoa Romaniassa, maassa, jonka kieltä en osannut lainkaan sinne lähtiessäni. Odotin metroa täpötäydellä asemalla. Vieraan kielen puheensorina täytti korvani, ulkopuolisuuden tunne ja koti-ikävä mieleni. Yhtäkkiä, korviini kantautui jotakin tuttua. Tutut pehmeät vokaalit, tuttu puheenrytmi. Joku puhui Suomea! Mikä valtava helpotus, koko ruumiini rentoutui pelkästä oman kielen kuulemisesta.

I still remember well that afternoon at the end of April, almost three decades ago. I was in Bucharest, had been there, in the capital of Romania, for almost 10 days without knowing a single word of the language in advance, feeling home sick. Suddenly, in the middle of the alien sounds of the foreign language, my ear catches something familiar. Someone is speaking Finnish! A feeling like a huge relief fills my mind and body.

He saavat puolustajan, Pyhän Hengen. He ovat jälleen kerran koolla.

Christ had ascended. But as he departed he had left a promise: his followers would not be left alone but they will receive an advocate, the Holy Spirit. And it has happened now. The extraordinary events taking place among them, drew people’s attention throughout Jerusalem.  More and more people begin to arrive to see what has happened.

Väkijoukko on monenkirjava. Jotkut ovat pyhiinvaellusmatkalla Jerusalemissa, jotkut asuneet poissa kotoaan vuosia. Paikalle kertyy monia kansallisuuksia, puhutaan monia kieliä.

The crowd is diverse, coming from faraway countries, speaking various languages. Each single person coming with her or his own cultural background, life stories, world views – each one of them faraway from home, feeling homesick, perhaps? And suddenly something familiar catches their ear: their native language. What a surprise, what a joy!

The disciples of Jesus expect something to happen. The arrival and the presence of the Holy Spirit is as radical and surprising as the presence of Jesus, the God Incarnated. From the very first moment, it is clear that this gift given is not something to be kept just among the disciples – but it is meant to be shared. The core mission of the newborn church, part of its DNA, is to open up towards those, who only just arrived, to address them, to invite, to receive them.

Like at the birth moment of the church, we also today here in the Espoo cathedral form a diverse, colorful congregation. And this is how a congregation is, no matter how local, no matter how parochially formed it is, it is a get-together of a diverse group of people. Each one of us coming with our life-stories yearning to be addressed with familiar language, to be received as we are.

The Spirit did not lead this diverse flock of people to uniformity, nor to monolingualism. The Spirit did not create a particular Christian or churchy language, something that would become a hall mark of a Christian congregation. The event of the Pentecost turned to a celebration of diversity and life in abundance. And this is how the Holy Spirit continues to work in the church today as well – not by squeezing each of us, each of our traditions, to one single mold but calling us together as we are, different to one another – creating abundance out of diversity.

The Holy Spirit is also a convening and uniting spirit. The events of Pentecost tell us, that what is shared, is not something we do, but instead, it is something that God does. We are united because we all live in communion with Christ, and through Christ we are one, the body of Christ – the church. So as today is the birthday of the church, it is also a birthday we all share

Me olemme yhtä koska me elämme yhteydessä Kristukseen ja hänen kauttaan yhteydessä toisiimme. Siksi kirkon syntymäpäivä, helluntai on meidän kastettujen kristittyjen yhteinen syntymäpäivä.

Niinpä haluan toivottaa teille kaikille:
